In Defence of New Testament Satanologies

I just realized that I never put this article on my website, even though it’s been out for more than 3 years! It’s an article that I wrote very quickly and furiously, because I strongly disagreed with some other scholars’ recent publications on Satan in the New Testament. I was very strongly channeling XKCD’s famous comic:

Basically, some other scholars’ had argued that the New Testament has a coherent Satanology. In other words they claimed that the New Testament texts depict Satan in similar ways. I strongly believe that this is not the case. The Journal for the Study of the New Testament had published these scholars original articles, and were happy to publish my critique.

In this article I point out why these other scholars are incorrect in their analysis both methodologically and with specific examples from Mark, Luke and Acts. This was not to pick on them, but they are the most recent in many authors that assume Satan to be a theologically monolithic figure. Ultimately, I show that there is loads of diversity and many divergent viewpoints on Satan in the New Testament. And that scholarship should focus on how books specifically portray Satan rather than trying to harmonise that figure.

If you have institutional access, you can get the article from the journal’s website: https://doi.org/10.1177/0142064X211045311.

If you do not, feel free to send me an email and I’ll sort you out. In the mean time, here is the first page:
